Lately, I’ve noticed a growing theme in conversations with clients. Phrases like, “I’d have no chance applying for that role,” or “I’ll apply, but sure we know I won’t get shortlisted.”
This is something that literally stops me in my tracks every time - because from where I’m sitting, the person saying those words is more than capable. They have the qualifications, the experience, the know-how, and the drive, yet, there’s that little voice inside whispering “You’re not good enough.”
That voice of self-doubt can be powerful. It can make even the most talented professional question their worth. It convinces us that others are better, brighter, or more deserving. But here’s the thing - the people around you, your coaches, mentors, or even your colleagues can see your potential clearly. They know you can do the job!
Self-doubt isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s often a sign of caring deeply. It comes from wanting to do well, to measure up, to prove yourself. But when it starts planting seeds of unworthiness, that’s when it needs to be challenged.
If you catch yourself thinking “Sure, I’ve no chance,” try flipping that script, to take back control:
Remind yourself of the evidence. What have you achieved so far? What feedback have you received that proves your strengths?
Trust the perspective of others. If a coach or mentor tells you you’re ready, believe them. They’re not saying it to be kind; they’re saying it because they can see what you might be missing.
Apply anyway. The act of putting yourself forward is powerful. Even if the voice of doubt tags along, let it sit quietly in the passenger seat while you take the wheel.
Confidence isn’t about never doubting yourself. Because even the most confident person out there has that same voice, internalising and trying to overpower them. Confidence is about moving forward in spite of that doubt. And sometimes, the smallest step - submitting that application, asking for that opportunity, or saying yes to that new challenge - is the one that proves your inner critic wrong.
You might not always feel ready, but you are capable. And if others can see it — maybe it’s time you did too.
